09/01/2019

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the Fraser Tech Muster and Trials, blow out the cobwebs and have some fun. Those wishing to be selected for our higher graded teams may want to take it a little more seriously and show the coaches what they’ve got.

Come along and be part of our great club!

  • Sunday,  10 February 2019, 9:30 am-11.30 am at Gallagher Hockey Centre
  • Saturday, 16 February 2019, 3:30 pm-5:30 pm at Gallagher Hockey Centre

Players are advised to wear blue socks if trialling for the Prem Teams and coloured socks if trialling for the other teams and wear white shirts. Everyone should bring a black shirt as an alternate strip or where bibs are not available.

2019 Trials Criteria and Information

We expect to have more than 100 men and women trialling for places in our club six teams for 2019.  To be fair to everyone, the expectation is that ALL players will take part in ALL aspects of trials, unless they want to play in a lower grade team.  If you cannot attend any aspect of trials, you must contact the Trials Convenors.

You don’t have to trial if you don’t want to.  Just email the Trials Convenors and we’ll put you in one of the lower grade teams.

Process

The format of trials has not been finalised, but it is expected that trials will test three key areas:

Skills:

Field Player – In 2018 the skills that were tested included ball carrying at pace, elimination & goal scoring, channelling & tackling, pushing & hitting.  Each skill was allocated a grade from 1 (best) to 6 (worst).

Goalkeepers – Composure, taking control and “presence” in the goal, hand/foot/special awareness

Match play: (field players & goalkeepers)

Day 1 of match play will focus on identifying players who have the potential to play Prem and Reserve grades.

Day 2 of match play will focus more on the Prem and Reserve selections (with no guarantee you will be placed in either team) and bringing along any players who couldn’t make it to Day 1.

Fitness: (field players & goalkeepers)

Fitness will be tested using a 2km run test (Gallagher Hockey Centre to Sailing Club and back). The fitness targets are:

  • for Prem players – under 11 mins
  • for Reserves players – under 13 mins

Note: remember these are just targets to aim for, and that fitness is one of three measures (fitness, skills, and game sense), so train, do your best, and don’t stress about it.

The results of the fitness and skills testing on Day 1 will determine some of the play for Day 2 of the match play.

Trials

Players are advised to wear blue socks if trialling for the Prem Teams and coloured socks if trialling for the other teams and wear white shirts. Everyone should bring a black shirt as an alternate strip or where bibs are not available.

We will play a traditional 3-3-3-1-1 system.

We will endeavour to place people in their #1 preferred line (striker/midfield/defence), and you can expect to be played anywhere in that line.  We will “not” cater for individual positional preferences.

There will be a maximum of 7 x 15-20 minute 11 aside games on day 1.  Players can expect to play for a minimum of 20 minutes, and up to 35 minutes

You must be registered, warmed up/stretched and ready to go before the trials commence.  This means registering 30 minutes prior and ready to go 15 minutes prior to your scheduled start time.

If you cannot attend, you must contact one of the Trials Convenors if you want to be considered for a team.

Selectors

Field players: Team coaches, with selected senior players will run each activity and will undertake the selection process.  The convenors will; review the process and if needed chair a neutral selection panel, review the fitness and skill testing results and assist with selecting teams based on those results, combined with the match play results.
