Hi All

With the winter hockey season well underway, there plenty happening at Waikato Hockey –

WAIKATO HOCKEY’S LIQUOR LICENSE –

Rules around the sale of alcohol from the Waikato Hockey pavilion have been tightened up.  The current ‘Club’ License is no longer suitable as it only allows club members and their signed in guests to purchase liquor.

The type of liquor License will change from Saturday the 6th of July and it is crucial that everyone is aware of the changes and abides by these.  The new liquor License will be a ‘General’ License which means that there is a restricted area where alcohol can be consumed .  The reasoning behind these rules and areas is that under the terms of the License, the Bar Manager on duty needs to be able to see patrons drinking whilst working behind the bar.

We will display signage outside which will clearly shows the areas where alcohol can (and can’t) be consumed but to summarise – alcohol can only be consumed along the Water 1 fenceline and straight out in front of the pavilion.

Alcohol cannot be taken over to Water 2 or be consumed in the changing rooms.  No alcohol can be brought onto the premises.

Breaking these  rules could lead to us losing our License.  Please be courteous to others with your actions.  We would really appreciate your help in ensuring that we adhere to the terms of this new liquor License.

THE NEW PAVILION –

The hockey pavilion extension officially opened on the 25th of May and everyone is welcome to use the new facilities at any time.

Please note that in addition to the public toilets that are inside the pavilion, additional toilets are located on the ground floor at the far end of the new pavilion extension.

CANTEEN –

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to Jo-Anne Jarvis-Hall, our new Canteen/Bar Manager.  You’ve probably noticed the recent changes to the menu including the home baked muffins and cookies and great barista coffee!

REGIONAL UNDER 18 TOURNAMENT –

From the 14th to the 20th of July, Waikato Hockey is hosting the inaugural Regional Under 18 Tournament.  This is the first time that the top tier U18 tournament has been in the same format as Hockey New Zealand’s Under 21 tournament, with representative teams from Northland, North Harbour, Auckland, Midlands, Central, Capital, Canterbury and Southern competing for national honours.

Our Wintec Midlands teams are made up of the best players from throughout the Midlands region and they’ve taken part in an intensive 15 week campaign in preparation for this tournament.  The first games take place on Sunday the 14th, with our Midlands teams taking the pitch at 2.00pm (Boys vs Southern) and 4.30pm (Girls vs Auckland).  For more details – visit www.midlandshockey.co.nz.

WAIKATO CLUB COMPETITION –

Congratulations to the Premier First Round Champions – the Storage King University Women and the Aber Old Boys Men.

WAIKATO SECONDARY SCHOOLS COMPETITION – DIVISION A UPDATE –

Congratulations to the Premier Champions Hamilton Boys High School and Waikato Diocesan School for Girls.  The top 13 secondary school teams from the Waikato competition (6 boys and 7 girls) are now taking part in a Midlands Intercity Secondary Schools competition along with 24 other teams from throughout the region.  Teams are competing in two divisions for the right to call themselves Midlands Intercity Champions.  These games will be played on Wednesday evenings at turfs throughout the region.

NZ JUNIOR BLACK STICKS –

Congratulations to Kim Tanner and Brooke Neal who head to Germany in July to compete in the Junior World Cup.  Updates will be available on the Midlands Hockey website –www.midlandshockey.co.nz

UMPIRES –

There have been some changes in the Umpires Committee.  Firstly we would like to take this opportunity to thank Carol for all the work she has done leading the umpiring team and doing all the appointments of umpires.  Following her resignation, we would also like to welcome Ben Wilson as the new Umpires Committee Chair.

This is an opportune time with these changes and at the halfway point in the season to remind some individuals (players, coaches and spectators) again about the need to respect the umpires.  The umpires are volunteers who give their time to come out and umpire games. They’re a hugely important part of our school and club competition and our hockey community without them, our hockey competition just doesn’t happen. Unfortunately we have had a number of umpires give up because of the way they have been treated – questioning decisions, arguing and generally abusing umpires will not make them change a decision, so please think before you act and let’s set a good example for all the children around hockey.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT –

Slicksticks – the Slicksticks programme was introduced into the Waikato in 2012 as a replacement for the Year 5 & 6 representative programme.  It’s proving to be a hugely successful programme for young hockey players in School Years 5 & 6 with well over 100 participants taking part for the second year in a row. The programme was run in Hamilton, Te Kuiti and Matamata.

Flicksticks – the new Flicksticks programme for Year 7 & 8 players is currently underway.  This development programme prepares the children for the Under 13 Representative Trials and for those not selected, the programme continues to develop them further.  There are over 130 children enrolled in the programme.
